Hailed by the New York Times as “delightful and vocally strong and versatile”, Emily Albrink is a young soprano who is at the beginning of a very promising career. Ms. Albrink begins the season as a Steans Artist at the Ravinia Music Festival and then joins the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at the Washington National Opera where she sings Frasquita in Carmen, the Second Niece in Peter Grimes, and Annina in the young artist production of La Traviata, conducted by Placido Domingo. She makes her Carnegie Hall debut singing Nuria in Ainadamar with Dawn Upshaw and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, conducted by Robert Spano. In addition, Ms. Albrink presents a recital on the Stotsenberg Recital Series in Los Angeles, CA and performs the west coast premiere of Jake Heggie’s song cycle Rise and Fall on a concert with Frederica von Stade in San Francisco.
Last season, Ms. Albrink returned for her second summer as a vocal fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where she appeared as Despina in Cosi fan Tutte with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, conducted by James Levine. She also debuted the role of Nuria in Ainadamar with the Colorado Music Festival under Michael Christie, a role that she repeated with Opera Boston, the Phoenix Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony, under the baton of Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Ms. Albrink then appeared as Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte with the Indianapolis Opera. She sang Handel’s Messiah with the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, Mahler’s Symphony no. 4 with the New Jersey Youth Orchestra, and was the featured soloist in What Makes It Great - A Song Concert Featuring Goethe’s “Kennst du das Land?” with Rob Kapilow for Stanford Lively Arts. In addition, Ms. Albrink made her professional recital debut at the Bomhard Theater at the Kentucky Center for the Arts as part of the Gheens Great Expectations Series.
In the 2006 season Ms. Albrink sang Parasha in Mavra and die Vertraute in Elektra at the Tanglewood Music Center. She also appeared as Laurie in The Tender Land with the Bronx Opera and performed the world premiere of ♀ Confessions by Clarice Assad as part of the Professional Training Workshop with Dawn Upshaw and Osvaldo Golijov at Carnegie Hall. She then traveled to Amsterdam to be one of eight young artists participating in the Schubert Master Classes for professional singer/pianist duos, studying with Elly Ameling, Rudolph Jansen, and Robert Holl.
A strong proponent of art song as well as new music, Ms. Albrink has participated in such programs as SongFest, the German for Singers Program at Middlebury College, the Franz-Schubert Institut in Baden bei Wien, Austria, and the Cleveland Art Song Festival where she has worked with such artists as Wolfgang Holzmair, Warren Jones, Martin Katz, Helmut Deutsch, and Graham Johnson. She has also collaborated with composers Ricky Ian Gordon, Jake Heggie, John Bucchino, Ned Rorem, Stephen Schwartz and John Musto.
Ms. Albrink received a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music Degree and Professional Studies Diploma from the Manhattan School of Music.
